Interesting ideas for engaging children in archaeology are coming from Cadw and Archaeology Wales. On the back of their excavations in the Vale of Galmorgan they will be inviting school children to ‘make & break’ prehistoric pottery! It is believed that in the Neolithic, people deliberately broke and deposited their prized possessions in the burial chambers of the dead. This reminds me of the activities we did with Mrs Gresham and the Y5s of Burbage Primary school at Solomon’s Temple. Here we re-enacted Beaker burials after looking at the evidence of the Bronze Age barrow on which the later Victorian folly is situated. We didn’t smash anything though!
